 Admissions & Financial Aid

General student eligibility requirements apply to the summer term. Your enrollment status is determined based on the combined number of total credits for which you register over the entire summer term. Visiting or non-degree seeking students are not eligible for financial aid. Financial aid for the summer term is limited. If you have questions about your options, please contact the Financial Aid Office.

Co-op Students

If you are participating in an approved University of Pittsburgh Cooperative Education program and, as a result, will be attending classes as a full time student during the summer term, please contact our office directly about financial aid programs available.

Stafford Loans

If you want to borrow during the summer semester, you must be enrolled at least half-time and have remaining loan eligibility. Please complete a Summer Loan Request and return it to our office. The Financial Aid Office will determine your eligibility and notify AES/PHEAA that you want loan funds for the summer.

Please be aware that your loan eligibility may be limited by maximums allowed for specific enrollments, grade level, academic year limits and/or aggregate loan total to date.

Alternative Loans

The University of Pittsburgh Office of Admissions and Financial Aid provides direct electronic application and fund transfer with nationally known lenders to provide alternative educational loan options for Pitt students.

These lenders exchange loan application information electronically with our office. Loan applications are received by Pitt and completed loan certifications are returned to lenders on a daily basis via an electronic link. In essence this means that we will receive notification of a pending loan application in a very timely manner and be able to certify it in the same manner, eliminating the need to deliver loan documents in person, through the US mail or via fax.

Loan funds from these group lenders are sent to the University via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and disbursed to the student's account the next day. This eliminates the need for a paper check to be sent to Pitt and for a student to endorse that check in person at the Student Payment Center. On average, typical total processing time for eligible students is fewer than 10 business days.

If you choose alternative loan lenders other than those listed here, you must complete and submit an Alternative Request Form to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid.

Pell Grant

Students who did not attend as a full time student in the preceding fall and spring terms and who were eligible for a Pell Grant may be eligible for a Pell Grant during the summer term. Students who attended both terms as a full time student during the regular school year are not eligible for a Pell Grant for the summer term. Please contact our office for details.

Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency/PHEAA Grant

Students who were eligible for a PHEAA grant for one or both of the preceding terms (fall, spring) may be able to apply for a summer term payment. Please contact our office for details.
