Social Sciences

Have you ever wondered . . .

Why people do the things they do? Are you curious as to how societies socialize their members? Or, have you ever been amazed at how events in the past influence events of the present? The social sciences offer answers to these questions through a wide variety of majors including:

These majors at the University of Pittsburgh are housed in the School of Arts and Sciences (A&S).

What a tremendous place for opportunity . . .

Majors in the social sciences lay the foundation for a broad range of later opportunities for employment and graduate study. Graduates with a Bachelor of Arts in a social science may choose careers like: management or sales, especially if they've combined their social science major with business, for example, our A&S/Business Dual major; or positions in local, state, and federal government; or jobs in a law-related field. Typically, students with a social science degree who plan to enter graduate programs, do so in business administration, public administration, law, social work, international relations, or education. (Teacher certification for K-12 may be completed at the fifth-year level in the School of Education. Teaching social sciences at the college level generally requires a Ph.D. in that area.)

The value of experience . . .

The University of Pittsburgh provides practical application in the social science fields through internship, volunteer, and social service opportunities. The Office of Experiential Learning, The Office of Student Employment, Student Volunteer Outreach, The Counseling Center and Career Services help you make these valuable connections. Not only will you be able to gain experience while enhancing your resume, but you will also learn something new while having fun.

A few examples of possible internships include working for the United States Government Accounting Office, the United States Department of Commerce, the Carnegie Museum, the Benedum Center, and the Allegheny Court of Common Pleas.

Breaking with tradition . . .

The interdisciplinary studies major is an alternative to the traditional majors regularly available to students. This approach frees you from established requirements of traditional majors and enables you to structure your academic program around your own interests. Humanistic studies and international relations are just two examples of interdisciplinary studies majors in the field of social science.

Noteworthy achievements...

The University of Pittsburgh's Anthropology Department is known around the world. It has long been famous for cross cultural research and publishes a major journal, Ethnology. The department is comprised of faculty in all branches of anthropology who participate in research projects in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Many students can get practical experience working directly with faculty on research projects including archaeological investigations, study of skeletal remains, laboratory research, observation of human behavior in many contexts, and much more.

The Department of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh is on the "cutting edge" in three areas: game theory; experimental economics; and large scale economic transitions.

The Association of American Universities ranks the University as one of the top 62 research institutions in North America, so the professors teaching your classes are also top-notch researchers.
