The University of Pittsburgh, originally named the Pittsburgh Academy, is one of the oldest
institutions of higher learning in the United States. It has come a long way since it was founded in
1787, the same year the Constitution was signed. From a humble log cabin at the edge of the American
frontier, it has evolved into an internationally recognized institution, extending new boundaries of
knowledge, research and creative endeavor.
The University of Pittsburgh is now comprised of 16 Pittsburgh campus schools and four regional campuses
offering over 400 degree programs system-wide, a world-renowned medical center, and close to 300 research centers,
institutes, laboratories and clinics.
